PROPHET NOBLE DREW ALI AND THE MOORISH SCIENCE TEMPLE OF AMERICA - 1913 - PRESENT
Prophet Noble Drew Ali, born Timothy Drew on January 8, 1886 in the state of North Carolina, Drew Ali received the Muslim name Sharif Abdul Ali while Studing in Egypt. The names of his mother and father are unknown;however is father is said to have been of Moorish descent. He is said to have been a direct descendant of the Moors of Morocc,North-west Africa. Drew Ali mother is said to have been of Cherokee ancestry .
By the early 1880's the Drew family moved and settle in Newark,New Jersey. however,it is said in New York City that the Drew family is said to have been taught by the great Muslim "Master Adept",Djamel al Din al Afghan (1838 -1897), who had come to visit the United States in the winter of 1882-1883. Al-Afghani is said to have been joined by his disciple chief initiate,Muhammad Abduh. the two missionaries is had come to the united States to propagate the doctrine of ancestral and cultural pride under the banner of Pan Islam, which is meant to insure that the divine teaching of the ancestors are not forgotten among the Moors of North America (Amexem). It is said the Moorish-American National Movement was founded on these teachings by Prohet noble Drew Ali.
At the hand of al-Afghani,the Drew family was inducted into the "sacred order",known as "The Brethen of Purity", brotherhood.
In his early teenage years of Drew Ali,he traveled to Egypt and study among the great "neophytes" , of al-Afghani and Muhammad Abduh. while at Alzhar University ,Drew Ali came under the influence of Muhammad Rashid Ridi (1865-1935) and Aziz al-Masri Bey(1878-1965),as well as the great egyptian nationalist Duse Muhammad Ali-Effendi(1866-1945) who lived in London,England at the time. Drew Ali is said to have studied at the old ethiopian College in Vatican City(Rome,Italy).
At the age of 27 in 1913,he founded the Moorish National and Divine Movement and the Moorish Holy Temple Of Science in Newark,New Jersey to uplift fallen humanity by returning the nationality,divine creed and culture to persons of Moorish descent in the Western Hemisphere.
Prophet Noble Drew Ali taught "all members must proclaim their nationality and thir Divine Creed that they may know that they are a part and a partial of this said government,and know that they are not Negroes,Colored Folks,Black People or Ethiopians,because these names were given to slaves by slave holders in 1779 and lasted until 1865 during the time of slavery,but this is a new era of time now,and all men now must proclaim their free national name to be recognized by the government in which they live and the nations of the earth.The Moorish Americans are the descendants of the ancient Moabites whom inhabited the Northern Western and South Western shores of Africa ".
In succeeding years,Prophet Noble Drew Ali established the national headquarters in chicago,and later in November 1926,incorporated a Moorish civic organization in the State of Illinois,A religious corporation,known as the Moorish Science Temple of america,was registed with the Illinois Secretary of State in May of 1928.
The purpose and goals of the Moorish Movement were articulated by Prophet Noble Drew Ali in the September 14, 1928 edition of his national weekly publication The Moorish Guide,when he indicated that it was "building on human needs" to:
- dispense charity and provide for the mutual assistance of its members in times of distress;
- aid in the improvement of health and encourage the ownership of better homes;
- find employment for members,and
- teach those fundamental principles which are desired for our civilization,such as obedience to law, loyalty to government,tolerance and unity. He further sated "We are friends and servants of humanity. We are dedicated to the purpose of elevating the moral,social and economic status of our people. We have set about to do this this through a wide and compre- hensive program embodying the principles of love,truth,peace,freedom and justice". To that end,in the pre-Depression years of the 1920's,Noble Drew Ali with Moorish-Americans purchase the first Temple grounds in Chicago,Illinois during May 1926.
Prophet Noble Drew Ali died in 1928. There are much more to be learn and know about this great man who brought birthrights and nationality to a lost people,the so-called negroes,colored and black people of America(Amexem).
